Sporting Pursuits

Confidence, teamwork and ambition

At Dolphin, sport is about much more than being good at games. It is about discovering what your body can do, learning to work with others and developing the confidence to keep going when something feels difficult.

With Wandsworth Common on our doorstep, excellent sporting facilities and specialist PE teaching, children have exceptional opportunities to be active, compete and discover sports they love.

Our approach is ambitious but inclusive. We want every child to enjoy being active and make progress, while giving those with particular talent or enthusiasm the coaching and opportunities to go further.

Move. Explore. Have fun. Lower School | Reception to Year 2

In the Lower School, sport begins with a sense of adventure.

Children develop the fundamental movement skills that underpin everything that follows: running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing and changing direction. Through games and imaginative activities, they begin to understand how their bodies move and how much fun it can be to be active.

Just as importantly, they begin to learn the foundations of playing with others. Taking turns, listening, sharing, encouraging a teammate and having another go when something does not work.

Our aim is simple: to build confident, capable young movers who want to join in.

As children progress through Years 1 and 2, they are introduced to a growing range of sports and begin to develop the skills, coordination and confidence that will allow them to flourish in the Upper School. They also have an opportunity to take part in various movement clubs such as football, netball prep, street dance, and sports fun.

Discover sport. Discover team. Discover the thrill. Upper School | Year 3 to Year 6

By the Upper School, children are ready to take their skills further.

They experience a broad programme of team and individual sports, including football, netball, rugby, cricket and athletics as well as dance and gymnastics, developing both technical ability and tactical understanding. Regular fixtures, House competitions, Sports Day and opportunities to represent Dolphin give children the chance to put those skills into practice.

Competition matters. It teaches children to commit, to perform under pressure and to respond when things do not go their way. At Dolphin, we want children to compete with courage, integrity and generosity, learning to celebrate a teammate’s success just as readily as their own.

For children who discover a particular talent or passion, there are opportunities to be challenged further. Our specialist teachers know our pupils exceptionally well, allowing them to identify potential, nurture confidence and help children set themselves meaningful goals.

And sport creates opportunities that extend well beyond the playing field and clubs (of which there are many) filtering into everyday life. Children learn to lead, communicate, take responsibility, persevere and trust the people around them.

Love Wisdom Truth More than a lesson

The sporting culture at Dolphin is deliberately ambitious, but it is never exclusive.

We want the child who dreams of representing the school team to have that opportunity. We also want the child who has never thought of themselves as “sporty” to discover a game they love.

Because when children feel known and supported, they are much more willing to take a risk, try something new and keep going when it gets hard.

That is where sporting confidence becomes something bigger.

The resilience to keep trying. The courage to compete. The discipline to improve. The joy of being part of a team. These are qualities children carry with them long after the final whistle.

At Dolphin, we want every child to leave us stronger, more confident and ready for their next challenge.
